JOAN GLADSTONE
About Joan Gladstone
Joan Gladstone is a Laguna Beach, California-based contemporary painter whose work is rooted in a lifelong dialogue between memory, place, and visual delight. Balancing graphic clarity with painterly warmth that is both contemporary and timeless. Her paintings capture coastal life with saturated color and crisp lines that transform everyday imagery into motifs of optimism and escape.
Raised near Coney Island, Gladstone’s early years were shaped by the vivid sensory experiences of seaside summers—amusement rides, boardwalk treats, and sunlit afternoons by the water. Just as formative were her teenage visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where exposure to great works broadened her visual vocabulary. This dual influence—playful Americana and formal artistic tradition—continues to animate her work today, infusing it with both sophistication and a sense of joy.
Gladstone pursued her artistic interests at Boston University School of Fine Arts before completing her degree at Boston University in 1975. While painting remained a constant personal pursuit, in her professional path she founded and led a strategic public relations firm for three decades. During these years, she continued her artistic training through studies with local painters and coursework at Laguna College of Art + Design, gradually refining the bold visual language that defines her work.
Since relocating to Laguna Beach in 1992, Gladstone has drawn deeply from her surroundings. A defining body of recent work, her Route 66 series, extends this exploration of American iconography. Created in anticipation of the highway's centennial in 2026, the series reimagines historic roadside signage from the legendary route stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica. These paintings, currently exhibited at the Hilbert Museum of California Art, function as both homage and reinvention through faded or vanished signs through a contemporary lens. One work from the series has been acquired into the museum's permanent collection, underscoring the cultural resonance of her subject matter and approach.
Across this series, Gladstone celebrates the spirit of the American road trip, evoking a shared cultural memory of travel, discovery, and visual spectacle. Gladstone became a full-time artist in 2017, bringing decades of professional experience and disciplined practice to her studio work. Her paintings have been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and are held in both private and institutional collections, including commissions for major healthcare environments such as UCI Health and City of Hope, where their uplifting qualities contribute to patient-centered spaces. In addition to her studio practice, she remains deeply engaged in her local arts community, serving as an Arts Commissioner for the City of Laguna Beach and as a docent at the Laguna Art Museum.
Through her work and civic involvement, Gladstone continues to champion art's ability to elevate the everyday and to connect viewers through shared experiences of beauty, memory, and joy.
