In Evening Calls, Jennifer Bain presents a new body of paintings exploring the drama and lyrical rhythms of the natural world. Known for her distinctive fusion of finely observed avian subjects and expressive abstraction, her compositions balance the vitality and stillness of nature. Bain portrays fleeting moments of birds perched, or in flight, and in subtle exchanges that she eternalizes within vibrant bands of color, or among expressively imagined botanical forms. 

Working primarily in acrylic on wooden panel, as well as more recently incorporating ink on clayboard, Bain has exhibited widely in galleries and appears in collections across the United States. Her singular approach has established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary nature-based painting.

In intimate and medium-scale works, Bain's continuously expanding visual vocabulary invites viewers into moments of consciousness of, and connection to, the visible and audible natural resources that enrich the world around us.

A chief characteristic of Bain's approach is how she realistically captures the moods and movements of her signature motif: birds in their natural poses. Also iconic of her work is how she strikes a masterful balance between traditional imagery and modern abstraction by situating her subjects within fields of structured geometric backgrounds composed of intersecting plaid-like bands of graphic color.

A recent expansion in Bain's material approach is her introduction of clayboard, a painting surface prepared with gesso similar to what was used during the Renaissance. Its archival finish provides an ultrasmooth ground for her innovative use of ink and fluid rendering of branches, leaves, and flowers in a dreamy and expressive stylistic brushwork akin to East Asian ink painting. Meanwhile she maintains the precision and contemporary naturalism of acrylic media in the painting of her birds who she often sees as messengers in a dialogue, whether with each other or the viewer, and sometimes in moments of silence.
