Richard Baker is known for his iconic portrayals of Southern California's  cultivated and leisurely lifestyle. His paintings of golf greens, tennis spectators, beaches, mountains, and desert scenes continue to resonate with collectors. 

 

Baker's approach to painting reflects his commitment to capturing visual perception, principally through the articulation of light and shadow, accented by the interplay of adjacent colors, with a subtle emphasis on geometric reduction. His luminous canvases balance representational clarity with subtle painterly abstraction, giving his work its accessible yet sophisticated character. 

 

Working between Los Angeles and La Quinta, Baker's longstanding career in film and television informs the clarity of his narrative and is evident in the finely composed staging of his subjects and their atmospheric surroundings. 

 

With seven solo shows since 2015 at Skidmore Contemporary Art alone, Baker's work appears widely in private collections throughout the United States. His paintings and exhibitions have been featured in publications including Palm Springs Life, Southwest Art, InCollect, and Artscene.
