About Bill Kane
Bill Kane is a California-based multimedia artist whose process combines color theory, photography, and lenticular imagery. His "Lenticular Emanations" distill the essence of devotional scroll paintings (such as Tibetan Thangkas) into luminous wall mounted panels that change from view to view. Blurring the limits of photography, painting, and printmaking, Kane redefines the idea of what an image is, and can be.
Through a longstanding studio practice with an ongoing engagement with Buddhist philosophy, Kane's work is grounded in spirituality, and the experiential qualities of abstraction. Kane's current works honor the “light bodies of enlightened beings" depicted in devotional scroll paintings such as Tibeten thangkas. His aim, in part, is to amplify their spiritual resonance while appealing to a modern audience.
To do so, rather than recreating static iconography, Kane began conjuring optically entrancing works that actively respond to the viewer's position. In this way, both the viewer and the image become dynamic counterparts, forming an interdependent partnership. Also in this way, each entity becomes a reciprocal figure, implying existential themes of impermanence and the fluid perception of reality within a changing realm of experience.
While Kane's panels resonate with the legacy of Color Field Abstraction, his sensibility is notably distinct. Western abstraction often connotes solemnity or existential intensity, his compositions are characterized by luminosity, openness, and a sense of levity offering contemplative experiences, inviting moments of reflection, and perceptual liberation.
Kane’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and is included in numerous public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, and the Crocker Art Museum. He is a recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships.
Kane continues to live and work in California, where his practice remains dedicated to the pursuit of clarity, transformation, and the subtle interplay between image and experience.
