ANDY BURGESS: POP GEOMETRY
On view May 5 through May 31, 2026

Laguna Beach, California
Andy Burgess is a contemporary artist known for vibrantly depicting midcentury modern architecture by synthesizing elements of pop art, cubism, and hard edge abstraction. His series-based work celebrates the optimism, clarity, and innovation of postwar international modernist art and industrial design.
Blending elements of cubism, pop art, and hard edge abstraction, Burgess's visual language of midcentury abstraction acknowledges the work of Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney, Paul Klee, Agnes Martin, and Sonia Delaunay in his use of hard edges, flattened planes, broken yet continuous areas of tone, and richly textured grids of intersecting colors.
British-born, Burgess draws inspiration from iconic steel-and-glass homes associated with both Palm Springs and Zurich, as well as concrete structures in Brazil, Argentina, and Spain. In bold compositions defined by crisp lines and saturated colors, he analyzes their structural characteristics and reinterprets them with distinctly improvisational exuberance.
Meticulous layering of reflectivity, translucency, color, and texture elevate his personal analysis into something both precise and emotionally resonant. Vivid palettes ranging from sun-washed neutrals to saturated reds, teals, citrus, and violets infuse his renditions of these midcentury modern dwellings with whimsicality and bravado, making them as much about fantasy as fact.
Produced as limited edition screenprints with archival pigments, Burgess’s work bridges fine art and design history, offering sophisticated, colorful compositions that function beautifully as both homage and reinvention by investigating modernist architecture while reaffirming its enduring relevance in contemporary art and design culture.
